The Starfish Story & Some Thoughts

The Starfish Story adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley (1907 - 1977) Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?" The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean." "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wi...

(Flash Fiction) Chasing & Wasting

7 years later, he called. Her answering machine automatically answered the call after a few rings.   “Hey Vanessa, this is Carl… Um, how have you been? Please call me back?” He released a breath, not knowing what to add. Exhilaration mixed with a deep sense of unpredictability, he continued.   “I miss you.   Are you in London now?”   “Hello? Who is this?” answered an unfamiliar male voice.   “I’m Carl.   Is Vanessa in?” he replied. “Sorry, Vanessa has moved out.” “Do you know where she is?” “The last I heard she was at Nyhavn, Copenhagen.   Living in one of those colourful houses” he paused for a mere second, “This is Javier by the way, I’m Vanessa’s friend.”   “Hi Javier, can I have her contact please?” “I’m sorry, she has informed me not to disclose her contacts.” “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND JAV! I have something urgent for her.” “Sorry dude, I really can’t disclose.   By the way Carl, she left a week ago and she told me that she has been waiting on a guy for more than hal...

Scissored Photograph (2009.04.22, 00:20hrs)

Deep in thought, she blinked her eyes. She was familiar with the angst she has always felt when people tried to intrude her life. She was born a private and selectively selfish person. Sometimes you would even mistaken her as a generous soul, other times you wonder do you actually knew her. Her shivering hand held up a meticulously scissored photograph, leaving a voluminous echo to the subjects of the picture. What appeared on the glossy surface were two sincere smiling faces; one was a 21 year old her. Undeniably the queen of the party. She remained almost stationary and glared ferociously; with the exception of a few strands of her long fizzy hair dancing to the westward wind. Anyone entering into the danger zone of her life has always made her felt deeply disrespected. She would never allow nosy parkers to even watch her play a game of Sudoku, let alone doing something to her picture. Pissed, she opted to endure silence. Flight over fight. Arousing an awareness could reveal more abo...

Rejected

Leaning forward being almost definite that she was beautiful or at least pretty in his sight, her slender fingers reached for his hand dangling an inch away from hers. Unknown to her, he was friendly but lacked the intention of holding her steadfast love. He rejected her hand in a very ungentlemanly manner which could only be expected from a thug or anything equivalent. The engaged observer watches in muse. ~ Pamela Pang Y.N.

Crack

Crack At the moment just right after I feel elated, my emotion-meter just plunged downhill like a fountain of water. I want my happiness to last, however, as Oscar Wilde wrote, “Nothing ages like happiness.” How true. I can feel the crack. Like how I envision the crack to be on a piece of rock. A deep line of erosion. I can’t justify the feeling I’m feeling. What I can describe is that my heart is trying to run away from how it truly feels. I hate to have my emotions oozed out. It makes me feel terribly vulnerable. ~ There’s a beautiful jellyfish floating around. The jellyfish just wants to float. You see the beauty of it and said, "You’re utmost beautiful!" because you meant it from the heart. The jellyfish took in the compliment and continues floating. Now you say goodbye with a smile but you really want to cry.
