This morning I woke up not following my usual routine as I was really about to be late for work; all to blame my reluctance to leave my bed. I did not switch on my radio like I would normally do. I brushed my teeth in the same conscientious manner, picked the lazy dress that saved me time on ironing, quickly showered and ran out of my apartment. I would definitely say that music is a huge part of my life and therefore I switched on the radio fm. To my horror, I heard the DJ breaking the devastating news of Steve Jobs's death. Quoting Steve Jobs she said, "You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle." I didn't want to believe what I heard and let the sad thoughts slide.
Arriving at the office, I would immediately check my office emails and as always I was on facebook on auto pilot. That was when reality hit. My facebook newsfeed was flooded with the bad news. Sorrowfully, I clicked on multiple links and waited for New Nation to write an article on it to express the common sentiment. A friend posted this article, "Steve Jobs Talked About Death in 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech" and I really thanked him for it. Stevie was inspiring and in his words, he remarked, "No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true."
Sometimes, I wondered why fans of celebrities are so emotionally-charged when their idols passed on. For the first time in my life, I understood that feeling; the loss of someone who is transformational and in the words of my boyfriend, "You may not have known him but he has touched your life in a positive way." Sure enough he did and I am not just limiting it to the products he has designed and influenced our generation. I am also encouraged by his spirit to fight on despite earlier failures and his positive outlook of life.
Last but not least, thanks for contributing the iPhone and Macbook which made my life less dull. RIP Steve Jobs, you left us your legacy. We will miss you!
